Spine very lightly darkened; lacking the front free endpaper; ink name on recto of frontispiece; text paper lightly toned; small chips to fore edges of a few leaves from careless opening; front inner hinge repaired with rice pape; else a VG copy. A novel of Devon. Handsome cover design. Mary Patricia Willcocks (1869 - 1952), a Fabian and a feminist, lived much of her life in Exeter, Devon. She possibly influenced Mary Webb, the novelist of Shropshire. According to Edwardian Fiction: an Oxford Companion, the present novel is a rewrite of Hardy's JUDE THE OBSCURE.
