Cozzens, is interesting as a forerunner of the 'slick' travelogue designed to capture the popular market. It bears heavily on the wrongs suffered by the Acadians during their expulsion as symbolized by Longfellow's EVANGELINE: A Tale of Acadie, and Cozzens's many and obvious prejudices destroy the value of his observations." - Story, Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature.

M'Gregor / MacGregor immigrated to Prince Edward Island from Scotland as a child, eventually serving as high sheriff and a member of the provincial assembly before leaving for England about 1828, where he became a noted statistician, author, and free trade advocate. This book is an expanded version of HISTORICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE SKETCHES OF THE MARITIME COLONIES OF BRITISH AMERICA (London, 1828), adding statistics and other practical information. "John McGregor tucked some tantalizingly interesting travel anecdotes into a book largely historical and descriptive. He was interested in the technology of transatlantic steam navigation, the intercolonial railroad and coal mining in Nova Scotia. The book is organized by topics - forest, animals, climate (especially thunder). He recounts incidents involving Acadians, Prince Edward Islanders, bickering St. John's royalists, fog-endangered trips on the Bay of Fundy; and comments on Quebec, Rimouski, Trois-Pistoles" - Waterston p. 52, Sabin 43280.
