Dust jacket has a chip to foot of spine, short tears, slight rubbing, lower corner of front flap clipped; good. "The Canadian journals of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Grey from May 1838 to July 1839; with letters written by him during that time to his father, the 2nd Earl Grey...While Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Grey was in Canada he undertook a special diplomatic mission to Washington on behalf of his brother-in-law, Lord Durham; he accompanied Lord Durham on brief visits to Upper Canada; and he participated in the suppression of the second rebellion in Lower Canada. Grey's nar rative of the events that transpired during his term of duty is unique. He was intelligent and acutely observant. His intimate knowledge of the Durham family permitted him to add much valuable detail to his descriptions, but since he was not a member of Durham's staff, and not in his confidence, he could record events freely and from a detached viewpoint. Grey's account of his interview with President Van Buren and his report of the crushing of the second rebellion have a vitality to be found only in eye-witness accounts. One can also visualize the patterns of daily life in Montreal at the time from his comments on such events as horse-races, pigeon-shoots, cricket matches, and performances at the Theatre Royal." - jacket. A volume in the publisher's Pioneer Books series of important records of early life in Canada.
