The bulk of the pamphlet reprints his lengthy letter to The Christian Review headed "Woodville, near Hamburg, S.C. February 20, 1849". He is responding to an article in the January issue urging the prohibition of slavery in the new territories taken from Mexico. He correctly argues that the Bible condones slavery. "Iveson Lewis Brookes, teacher, Baptist minister, and planter, was born in Rockingham County, N.C. Brookes, a 1819 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., amassed, through marriage and purchase, considerable holdings of land and slaves in Jasper and Jones counties in Georgia and Edgefield County and other locations in South Carolina. He also worked in schools for much of his life (teacher at Greensboro Academy, Greensboro, N.C., 1819; rector of Eatonton Academy, Eatonton, Ga., 1820s; principal of Penfield Female Academy, Penfield, Ga., 1840s), employing overseers to manage his plantations while he taught and preached at various Baptist churches. He was also active in national and local Baptist affairs and was a staunch defender of slavery." - University of North Carolina, introduction the Brookes papers collection at UNC. Hamburg, S.C., was a small all-black community across the Savannah River from Augusta, GA. It was the scene of white on black violence in 1876 during Reconstruction ("The Hamburg Massacre"). The last residents of the town left in 1929 and there are no visible remains of the community today. This is one of its earliest imprints. An argument for the liberalization of the English university curriculum. Sedgwick was the great Christian geologist at Cambridge who got Darwin interested in the subject. "This volume reprints the expanded, published version of the discourse given in 1832 in Trinity College Cambridge. Adam Sedgwick dealt with two controversial issues of his time; the significance of the new gerological data about the origins of the earth, and the attitude which Christians should adopt towards the theory of utility." - jacket.

This second part of Bishop Mountain’s visitation to his diocese recounts his voyage up the Ottawa River in 1843, with stops at St. Martin, St. Andrews, Grenville, Clarendon, Aylmer and Hull, and, the Bishop’s tour through the parishes in the Gaspé in the autumn of 1844.

Published in the same year as the UK edition. Sydney Smith, an Anglican cleric who promoted progressive causes - the education of women, the abolition of slavery and the teaching of practical subjects rather than the classics - was also known as a great wit and humourist. One of his most famous lines was that his friend Henry Luttrell's idea of heaven was "eating pâté de foie gras to the sound of trumpets". Note: 1.5 kg parcel, extra postage may be required.

"The art pages of this book were designed and drawn by Miss E.M. Breithaupt, of Kitchener, Ontario, who spend several yeas designing for the China Health Association. They are based upon an intimate study of designs found on Chinese walls, porcelain, silks and coins." - p. vii. A nice copy. The designs, by a Canadian artist, are quite attractive. She also did the attractive cover design.

Jerónimo Lobo, a Portuguese Jesuit, travelled to Lake Tana and the Blue Nile, reaching the province of Damot. He was the second European to describe the sources of the Blue Nile and was the leading European expert on Abyssinia / Ethiopia of his day. Like the other Jesuits, he was expelled from the country in 1648. This second edition includes a new preface by the editor, George Gleig, in which he attacks the numerous printer's errors in the 1735 edition. It also includes material not in that edition. The fourth Dissertation is about the mythical Christian ruler Prester John. There are seven "other tracts" by Johnson in the book. Courtney & Smith pp 2-4. (Old former owners' names are James Geddes, Thornhill, 1828, George Sutton, and Thomas Haggart. I believe these men were residents of Ontario.)
