Minor wear to spine tips and outer corners; short tear to front free endpaper; 1891 pencil inscription on verso of front free endpaper; slight foxing to first few leaves; small brown spot to fore margin of 7 leaves near middle; cracked front inner hinge neatly repaired; about a VG copy otherwise, still attractive. This Scottish author, who lived for a time in Australia and England, wrote at least 45 novels. This one is set in Tasmania in the year 1813. Scarce.

Inscribed by Brown on front free endpaper. Wait was one of the exiles to Australia after the failed 1837 Rebellion in Upper Canada. He sentenced to death, then transported to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania), and escaped, living to old age after hard trials and adventures.; Signed by the editor
