Non-pictorial dust jacket has some rubbing and small chips and tears, VG generally.. Binding, title page, and jacket lettering by Thoreau MacDonald. "Tiberius Caesar held the ironical theory, that a man had his price; that a kept man give little trouble; that it was a privilege for lesser peoples to give way before a Master Race...all in the interests of a world-conquering culture. He had his leaders and generals, his toadies and quislings everywhere, even in the Holy Land. This magnificent story is exactly right for these momentous times. The callous hunger for power of the Roman war lords was matched by an appalling spiritual sabotage by the Jewish leaders themselves. Any means was justified in their determination to retain control. It all culminated in the degradation of a race, as well as the death...of a lonely Prophet, son of refugee parents. Yet all history is dated to that hour." - jacket flap. Published during WWII, the story, of course, has bearing on the Nazi "Master Race"'s lust for raw power.

An interesting essay on the publishing history of the book can be found in John Metcalf's KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS, where he convincingly argues that almost no copies were sold in Canada before this 1945 Ryerson edition and the modern paperback, so that it cannot have had any influence to speak of on the development of the Canadian short story, despite some academic claims to the contrary. Lastly, the present copy has the ink ownership signature of John Metcalf.
