Dust jacket has a sticker stain to front flap, small bookstore label to rear flap, tiny chips to outer corners, else fine. Lewis's novel about the war years he spent in Toronto, which he felt was the low point in his career. Written when he was in his 70's, it is the most personal of his novels and is considered by some to be his greatest work. An edition of only 3K copies, made from UK sheets. Apart from minor rubbing to spine tips, small faint damp stain to rear cover, a fine copy. Front cover stamped at bottom "Commercial Edition" and rear cover stamped with the compliments of O. Newcombe & Co., piano manufacturers of Toronto. This 4th edition contains a new author preface and updates since 1888 as well as new illustrations. First edition was in 1886.
